How can you persuade Congress to set money aside for Everglades?
Chauncey Goss: You build coalitions. Right now we have had a mixed message. You are one of 435 and you have to work for it.
Francis Rooney: State role and federal role. The problem is that the feds haven't come through with any of their money. Marco Rubio said last week in Tampa Bay Times that we have to figure out what we want. We have to amass local political support. Bring key decision makers down here to see it.
Rooney: We have an Everglades Caucus set up by Mario Diaz-Balart and that's a good start.
NOTE: These aren't quotes. paraphrases.
How does your stance differ from the three past congressmen?
Policy on 13 million illegal immigrants?
Goss: You need to secure the border. That's a national security issue as well. We also need to come up with something call E-verify. Make sure only employing those who are here legally. Unfortunately, we don't take it very seriously right now.
Rooney: We absolutely need to secure the border. The border leaks. I don't think the Obama administration wants to secure the border. The first thing is to secure the border. Then we have to secure the air border. Student visas, spousal visas, visas from Western European countries. The San Bernardino killer came here on a spousal visa. The other thing is there was a bill passed last year in the House called the Safe Act.
Do you support Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump? And on his area of immigration.
Rooney: He's certainly not polished. We have a lot of secular muslims who don't pose a threat. But need to make sure people who come here don't pose a threat.
Rooney: Despite the over-broad statement from Trump on immigration, I am for Trump, because I don't want Hillary Clinton.
Goss: I support E-Verify. But yes, I do support Donald Trump.
What country is the greatest threat to you and why?
Rooney: I can't say a single country. Obama's abject weakness is allow a realignment of power.
Rooney: China, Russia and Iran are leveraging each other.
Rooney: All these things in motion are affecting badly our relationship with Sunni states.
Goss: I think Iran. It's acting very badly and using a lot of proxies around the world. Iran is destabilizing that part of the world and threatening Israel which is our only ally there -- Turkey is or was an ally. The administration doesn't understand the dynamic very well. He's alienated our friends and emboldened our enemies.
What's your plan for those who would be uninsured if Obama were repealed?
Goss: Let the states handle it.
Rooney: They're going to get cared for one way or another. The emergency rooms provide the care and we pay for it indirectly. If you could get the White House to repeal and start fresh with competition... the free market could work.
Rooney: They expected the exchange to fail and now the government will take it over.
Do you have a question for the candidates? If so, please submit your questions in the chat and it may be asked during the forum.
Goss on Social Security: It's easy to fix because it's a math problem. Have to take a look at people working vs retiring. People are living longer. Absolutely support raising the retirement age. But I don't support it for anyone 55 or older. I'm 50 and I know it won't be there for me and the way I want it. I would talk to the actuaries and ask what that age should be.
Rooney on Social Security: I've talked to a lot of young people and it really bothers me that they don't believe social security will be there for them. It's not a good things when people don't have confidence the government's promises on social security will be kept.
Is Goss an Obama Republican?
Goss on budgets: I was a staffer. I can't take credit for passing or not passing budgets. I'm really proud of American's roadmap for the future. How do you reform welfare and the tax code?
Goss on budgets: I hate PACs and I'd like to see campaign finance reform.
Rooney: I don't know about the ad. But I do know about the 2010 budget. It would be a terrible mistake for Florida. You do not want in-shore rigs and rigs that are offshore. The oil that comes in off the rigs -- we don't want them. If you take off regional southwest to Dallas. I was very concerned about that in the 2010 budget. No CERP money in there. This incrementalists, log rolling, getting along with leadership, is not going to get the ball rolling.
@MisaAmane: Bongino said he didn't wish to participate in our forum.
Do you agree on a mental health check before someone purchases a firearm?
Goss on guns: I don't agree with a mental health check because I don't know who would give it. But if someone has a mental health issue, they should not be able to purchase a firearm.
Rooney on guns: There's a big problem with mental health in this country. There was a time when people could be taken care of a protected from themselves.
Rooney on guns: Doesn't directly answer the question.
