Question from audience: If we drop Common Core how do we handle the lack of federal funds from the government?
Lucarelli: I don’t think we could throw out Common Core. We have the opportunity to focus on the things we don’t like and make changes.
Penta: I don’t think the federal government is ever going to stop funding if we don’t implement Common Core curriculum. This is something that needs to be done over time.
Carter: The guidelines are coming from the state. We can’t just drop it overnight. Children can be held back or prevented from receiving their diplomas.
Dixon: We can chose our own curriculum and materials but can’t throw out testing.
Question from the audience: Are textbooks presenting a biased and unbalanced view of our country?
Penta: It's very unbalanced. If elected would reevaluate textbooks.
Carter: It's fair and balanced. Our children need to understand what's going on in the rest of the world.
Dixon: How would you like it as a vet if the textbooks ignored the bombing of pearl harbor but discussed nuclear bombs in Japan as a survivor of a bombing? That’s unbalanced.
Lucarelli: There is no unbalance, and textbooks are just one tool used in the classrooms.
Question from the audience: Should children be able to use the bathroom of their choice?
Carter and Dixon: Should not use bathroom of their choice. Should use bathroom of their gender.
Lucarelli & Penta: Should use bathroom of their gender but transgender students should be handled on a case by case basis and perhaps given choice to use the nurses bathroom.
Dixon's closing statements: Collier County shouldn't settle. We need to strive for more than just meeting the standards.
Carter: We need a leader who understand finances. We don't need a bully on the board, we need a leader with integrity.
Penta closing statement: I've invested my time and money in the community and I'll continue to do so whether elected or not.
Lucarelli closing statement: I'll be visible and accessible at the schools and will listen to the community.
