Hello, welcome to the chat. The crowd is starting to fill out here for what will be one of the final forums before the primary
I'll be here answering questions and fielding comments throughout the debate. Here at the onset, I think we should all agree to do our best to limit any cursing to that which is absolutely neccessary
It looks like District 2 (North Naples) candidates are up first, fighting to fill the two-year remainder of outgoing Georgia Hiller's term. Hiller is, of course, running for clerk
Two-minute opening statements to start, followed by a series of questions from our panel and the public
James Calamari, former firefighter and medic: I'm a boots on the ground guy. I'm an operations guy. I have the experience to do this job
Jim Carter, business consultant and former commissioner: I'm an expert, some say, in strategic planning. I was called the can-do commissioner
Andy Solis, lawyer: In the last four or five years, I've been involved in growth management, natural resources and econ development. Those are the main issues facing county. I have the experience to help
Greg - How do you think the forum is going so far?
Carter and Solis would like to see impact fees on sliding scale, so small houses don't pay as much as large, and homes in Immokalee aren't charged same rate as those in North Naples. Calamari would revisit structure, but not necessarily in favor of changing it
Forum is going well. The challenge is always drawing out the differences between the candidates in how they would vote. Lots of agreement between the D2 candidates so far
Here's a question: Is there enough beach parking in North Naples?
All three say they would not add sports fields to North Collier Regional Park. Hot topic right now, as there is a clear need for more sports fields but little space to put them. North Collier also has preserve land that would be hard to touch
And we're wrapping up District 2 here. Calamari wants to merge two largest fire districts in the county, while Carter and Solis would want to study the issue more. District 5, I believe is up next
So here we have Randy Cash, retired Army and pilot, vs. Bill McDaniel, real estate, excavation and mining co. owner, and Doug Rankin, lawyer and Republican committeeman
Do you favor another Interstate 75 interchange?
